Barbara Branco (U.Warwick) delivered a seminar on Predictive Justice and Affective Governance at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES), Iscte.
Discussant: Rafaela Granja (CECS, U.Minho)
The seminar examines the relationship between predictive justice and affective governance. The relevance of such enquiry lies in the consistent neglect of affect within studies of punishment, despite the overwhelming presence of emotions in criminal justice settings, such as anxiety, fear and distrust. To undertake this analysis, the paper starts with an explanation of affective governance, before defining predictive justice. Lastly, it suggests an understanding of their relationship by drawing on the concept of ontological security.
